Coconut oil has garnered a lot of attention recently, and for good reason; it’s like liquid gold. Coconut oil, despite being made up of 90% saturated fat, has been shown to help quell hunger, promote radiant skin and also reduce the risk of heart disease. Today, we are going to talk about why we were adamant about adding virgin coconut oil to Après and why this saturated fat should be a part of your daily routine.
Coconut oil is made up of beneficial fats called MCTs, medium-chain triglycerides, which are a special kind of saturated fat that is easily absorbed and digested by the body. One study shows that this allows our body to access these fats for quick, sustained energy. Therefore, coconut oil is used to help your body and brain power through the day.
Coconut oil has also been shown to help whittle the waistline. In a study by the NIH, scientists found that those that added coconut oil to their diet actually saw an uptick in metabolism while also curbing appetite.
The MCT’s in coconut oil are not only fantastic for burning belly fat and keeping you full but they also protect your gut and fight invaders. MCTs have anti-microbial effects, which explains their use in holistic medicine for hundreds of years.
It's also important to note the differences in coconut oil. The most common two types are refined coconut oil and virgin coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil is the least refined version of the oil in that it is pressed from fresh coconut meat which has been shown to have extra antioxidants.
Since coconut oil has a host of benefits, how can you add more of it to your diet? Coconut oil has a really high heat point, which makes it great for sautéing veggies or frying up eggs. It’s also wonderful stirred in with coffee or as a substitute for butter in your baked goods. We also like to apply it to our skin post shower for its moisturizing effect. Is there anything coconut oil can’t do?!
